President Grover Cleveland signed a bill to legally recognize Labor Day in 1894 giving only federal workers the day off. What a bummer! In the late 1930’s union workers organized strikes to make sure the laboring classes were included in recognizing Labor Day as well.

Some confuse Labor Day – the day we celebrate and recognize the sacrifices and sweat American workers made and continue to make to build this country, with Memorial Day – the day we recognize those soldiers that died while in active duty or Veteran’s Day – a day to honor those that served in the military past and presently. Labor Day is always the first Monday in September. It can be on the 1st-7th. Canada also recognizes Labor Day on the first Monday of September, but they spell it fancier, Labour Day. Well played Canada!
